Fukashima Tritium Recovery from Intrusion Water

After the Fukashima Daiichi nuclear accident Torion Plasma partnered with Kurion Inc. (now Veolia) to demonstrate a technology to treat the vast quantities of low activity tritiated water instead of dumping in the ocean.  Kurion and Torion were awarded one of three $10 million US dollar contracts from the Japanese government to build a demonstration plant.

Torion Plasma provided the expertise to:

upgrade the existing Combined Electrolysis and Catalytic Exchange (CECE) system located at NSSI to demonstrate low activity, high throughput operation

R

Integrate a fuel cell with the CECE system to demonstrate energy recovery

R

license a new tritium facility in Washington State for an industrial scale demonstration of the CECE

R

Design the industrial scale CECE with 100 m³/hr proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer (Ecell) and 12″ diameter liquid phase catalytic exchange (LPCE) columns – collectively called the Kurion MDS®

R

work with the Kurion Engineering and Build team to install the MDS®

R

provide oxide beds and getter beds for safe tritium handling

R

provide training and operational support during the runs for the Japanese government (METI) demonstration contract
